Chapter Nine.

Ronan

Despite my initial reluctance, we ended up staying out in the forest for most of the day.

It felt good to be back. To feel the wind through my fur, the dirt under my paws. After so long spent as an outcast—albeit self-imposed—having my packmates surrounding me again was nothing short of exhilarating. The joy of it sang through my bone marrow, and when I put my head up and howled, snatches of their own song echoed back to me through the trees.

By the time I arrived back in town, I was spent. I shoved on the spare clothes we’d stashed in the gatehouse earlier, getting dressed in a daze. Noah nudged my shoulder as he wandered past.

He grabbed a bottle of water off the side of the gatehouse, chugging half of it in one go and wiping his mouth. “Tell us about the chick.”

Jake bobbed up beside him and snagged the bottle for himself, ignoring Noah’s protests. “Yeah, man! She’s hot.”

My eyes narrowed and my teeth bared, lips peeled back to reveal my sharp incisors. My shifter growled; it was a struggle to wrestle it back down beneath the surface.

“Woah.” Zac appeared with spiky hair and a towel draped around his neck. He’d fallen into the creek as we were heading back and was none too pleased about it. “Dude, relax.”

I shrugged the guys off as they attempted to calm me. They seemed to get the message. Crowding me only made it harder to control the wolf within.

“Wow,” Noah whispered. He looked awed. “You’re actually fated mates.”

I didn’t reply. The look on my face must have said enough, because the other two dropped down to a nearby bench, dumbfounded.

“We thought it was just a crush or something,” Noah said. I just looked at him, and he shrugged. “What? It seemed kinda far-fetched, is all.”

“Is that why you’re all tensed up?” Jake asked. “Man, you need to get it out of your system. All the crazy shifter stuff—it won’t go away until you... you know.”

“No,” I rumbled. “I don’t know.”

Jake and Zac looked a little nervous. Noah came over to me and laid a hand on my arm. I didn’t try to throw him off, but I did glare, hoping that the sheer force of my rage would get him to back off.

Ha. As if I’m ever that lucky.

“What we’re trying to say is...” Noah quirked an eyebrow, fixing me with his serious, steady gaze. “Don’t try to fight this one, Ronan. I know how stubborn you get, but you just gotta let fate do its thing. The rest will fall into place, you’ll see.”

I gritted my teeth together, but managed to nod.

I want to see her. Right now.

It was the oddest thing, like a magnet dragging a compass needle due north—the urge to get back to her, now that I was close by, was overwhelming.

I left soon afterwards, but only after I’d endured as many encouraging backslaps as I could handle.

I approached my house in good spirits.

The day had been more fun than I’d expected, but the conversation after had set my mind on one thing.
